What Is YouTube?

YouTube is the world's largest free video website. Think of it as a TV with unlimited channels that plays whatever YOU want, whenever you want.

What you can watch on YouTube:

  • Exercise and stretching videos designed for seniors
  • Cooking shows and recipes from every cuisine
  • How-to guides (fix a leaky faucet, use your iPhone, crochet a blanket)
  • News from every network
  • Nature documentaries and travel videos
  • Music — every song ever recorded is probably on YouTube
  • Church services and religious content
  • Gardening tutorials
  • History channels and educational content
  • Funny animal videos (everyone's favorite)

And it's completely free.

Getting Started

On Your Phone or Tablet

  1. YouTube is pre-installed on most phones. Look for the red play button icon.
  2. If not installed, get it from the App Store or Google Play Store
  3. Open YouTube
  4. Sign in with your Google account (Gmail) — This is optional but recommended so YouTube remembers what you like

On Your Computer

  1. Open your web browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge)
  2. Go to youtube.com
  3. Sign in with your Google account (optional)

On Your TV

YouTube is available on:

  • Smart TVs (Samsung, LG, Sony, etc.)
  • Roku
  • Amazon Fire Stick
  • Apple TV
  • Chromecast

Look for the YouTube app in your TV's app menu.

Finding Videos to Watch

Searching

  1. Tap the search icon (magnifying glass) at the top
  2. Type what you want to watch:
  • "Easy exercises for seniors"
  • "How to make chicken soup"
  • "Beginner yoga for older adults"
  • "How to use iPhone"
  1. Press Enter or tap Search
  2. Browse the results and tap any video to play it

Browsing Recommendations

YouTube's home page shows videos it thinks you'll like based on what you've watched before. The more you watch, the better the recommendations get.

  1. Tap the microphone icon next to the search bar
  2. Say what you want to watch: "Show me chair exercises for seniors"
  3. YouTube finds matching videos

On a smart TV, you can also use your TV remote's voice button.

Watching Videos

Video Controls

When a video is playing:

  • Tap the screen to show/hide controls
  • Play/Pause — Tap the center button or spacebar (on computer)

  • Full screen — Tap the square icon in the bottom right
  • Captions — Tap the CC button to turn on subtitles (helpful if you're hard of hearing!)

Making Text Bigger with Captions

Saving Videos for Later

Watch Later Playlist

  2. Tap the three dots (⋮) next to the video title
  3. Tap "Save to Watch Later"
  4. Access your saved videos: tap Library → Watch Later

Creating Playlists

Organize your favorite videos by topic:

  1. While watching a video, tap "Save" (bookmark icon)
  2. Tap "+ New Playlist"
  3. Name it (e.g., "Morning Exercises," "Recipes to Try," "Garden Ideas")
  4. Save the video to that playlist
  5. Access playlists in your Library tab

Downloading Videos for Offline (YouTube Premium)

YouTube Premium ($13.99/month) lets you download videos to watch without internet — great for travel. Without Premium, you need internet to watch.

YouTube Settings for Seniors

Increase Text Size

On your phone, increase your phone's font size (Settings → Display → Font Size). YouTube respects your phone's text size settings.

Turn On Restricted Mode

This filters out potentially inappropriate content:

  1. Tap your profile picture (top right)
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap General
  4. Turn on "Restricted Mode"

Manage Autoplay

By default, YouTube plays another video when the current one ends:

  • To stop this: Toggle off "Autoplay" — the switch at the top of the "Up Next" section
  • This prevents endless watching and saves data

Set Reminders

YouTube can remind you to take a break:

  1. Tap profile picture → Settings → General
  2. Turn on "Remind me to take a break"
  3. Set a time (every 30, 60, or 90 minutes)

Avoiding Scams and Bad Content

Red Flags on YouTube

  • "You've won!" pop-ups or comments — Always scams
  • Links in video descriptions claiming free gifts — Don't click
  • Miracle health cures — "This one food cures cancer" is always false
  • Financial schemes — "Make $10,000/day from home" is a scam
  • Impersonator channels — Check for the verification checkmark next to channel names

Safety Tips

  • Never click links in YouTube comments — they're often scams
  • Don't share personal information in comments
  • Be skeptical of health advice — Always consult your doctor
  • Report suspicious videos — Tap the three dots → Report
  • Avoid comments sections if they stress you out — the video content is what matters

YouTube vs. YouTube Premium vs. YouTube TV

Feature YouTube (Free) YouTube Premium YouTube TV
Price Free $13.99/month $72.99/month
Ads Yes No ads Yes (like cable)
Content All YouTube videos All YouTube videos Live TV channels
Downloads No Yes Yes (DVR)
Music With ads YouTube Music included Not included
Best for Everyone Ad-free experience Replacing cable TV

Our recommendation: Free YouTube is plenty for most seniors. If ads are really annoying you, YouTube Premium removes them. YouTube TV is a full cable TV replacement (CNN, ABC, ESPN, etc.) — only get it if you're cutting the cord from cable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is YouTube free?

Yes! Watching YouTube is completely free. You'll see ads before and during videos (like TV commercials). YouTube Premium ($13.99/month) removes all ads, but the free version works great.

How much internet data does YouTube use?

About 1-3 GB per hour depending on video quality. On Wi-Fi at home, this doesn't matter. If using mobile data, watch on lower quality: tap the gear icon → Quality → choose 480p or lower.

Can I watch YouTube without a Google account?

Yes, but creating a free Google account (Gmail) is recommended. It lets YouTube remember your preferences, save favorites, and give you better recommendations.

How do I stop YouTube from playing videos I don't like?

  1. When you see a video you don't want: tap the three dots (⋮) → "Not interested" or "Don't recommend channel"
  2. YouTube learns from this and adjusts your recommendations
  3. Over time, your home page becomes tailored to your interests

Can my grandchildren watch YouTube safely?

For children under 13, use YouTube Kids — a separate app with curated, age-appropriate content. It filters out inappropriate videos and has parental controls. Download it from the app store.

How do I share a YouTube video with someone?

  1. Open the video
  2. Tap the Share button (arrow icon)
  3. Choose: text message, email, WhatsApp, Facebook, or "Copy Link"
  4. Send it to your family or friends
