Person sending a photo on their smartphone

Sharing photos with family and friends is one of the most enjoyable things you can do with your phone. Whether it is a picture of your garden, a birthday celebration, or a funny moment with the grandchildren, WhatsApp makes it simple to send photos to anyone in the world — for free.

This guide walks you through the process step by step, for both iPhone and Android phones. No technical experience needed.

What You Need Before You Start

  • A smartphone (iPhone or Android)
  • WhatsApp installed on your phone
  • A WiFi connection or mobile data
  • At least one contact on WhatsApp to send a photo to
  • A photo saved on your phone, or your phone camera ready to take a new one

How to Send a Photo on iPhone

Step 1: Open WhatsApp

Find the green WhatsApp icon on your home screen and tap it. If you cannot find it, swipe down on the home screen and type "WhatsApp" into the search bar.

Step 2: Open a Chat

Tap the Chats tab at the bottom of the screen. Then tap the name of the person you want to send a photo to. If you have messaged them before, they will appear in your list.

If they are not in your list, tap the pencil icon in the top right corner to start a new chat, and select the person from your contacts.

Step 3: Tap the Plus (+) Button

In the chat, look at the bottom left of the screen. You will see a plus (+) button next to the text box. Tap it.

Step 4: Choose Your Photo

A menu will appear. You have two choices:

  • Photo & Video Library — Choose a photo you have already taken
  • Camera — Take a new photo right now

If you choose the library, your phone will show your saved photos. Tap the one you want to send. You can select more than one photo at a time by tapping on multiple pictures.

Step 5: Add a Caption (Optional)

Before sending, you can type a short message at the bottom of the screen. For example, you might write "Here is a photo from the garden today!" This step is completely optional.

Step 6: Tap Send

Tap the blue arrow button in the bottom right corner. Your photo will be sent straight away. You will see it appear in the chat.

How to Send a Photo on Android

Step 1: Open WhatsApp

Find the green WhatsApp icon on your home screen or app drawer and tap it.

Step 2: Open a Chat

Tap the Chats tab if it is not already selected. Then tap the name of the person you want to send a photo to.

If they are not in your recent chats, tap the chat bubble icon in the bottom right corner to start a new conversation and pick them from your contacts.

Step 3: Tap the Paperclip Icon

Inside the chat, look for the paperclip icon next to the text box at the bottom of the screen. Tap it.

Step 4: Choose Your Photo

A row of coloured icons will appear. Tap Gallery (the purple icon) to pick a photo from your phone, or tap Camera (the grey icon) to take a new one.

If you choose the gallery, browse through your photos and tap the one you want. You can select several photos at once by tapping and holding the first photo, then tapping additional ones.

Step 5: Add a Caption (Optional)

You can type a short message in the box at the bottom of the screen before sending. This is a nice way to add context, like "Look who visited us today!" You can skip this step if you prefer.

Step 6: Tap Send

Tap the green arrow button to send. The photo will appear in the chat within a few seconds.

Common Problems and Solutions

"WhatsApp says it cannot access my photos"

Your phone needs to give WhatsApp permission to view your photo library. Go to your phone Settings, find WhatsApp, and make sure Photos (iPhone) or Storage (Android) permission is turned on.

"The photo is taking a long time to send"

Large photos need a good internet connection. Try connecting to WiFi if you are using mobile data. Move closer to your WiFi router if the connection is slow.

"I sent the photo to the wrong person"

Do not worry. Tap and hold the photo in the chat, then tap Delete. Choose Delete for Everyone if you act quickly (within about an hour). The photo will be removed from their chat as well.

"The photo looks blurry when I send it"

WhatsApp slightly reduces photo quality to make sending faster. For most photos this is not noticeable. If you need to send a high-quality photo, tap the plus or paperclip icon and choose Document instead, then select the photo. This sends the original full-quality version.

"I cannot find the photo I want to send"

Try scrolling through your gallery. Photos are usually sorted by date, with the newest at the bottom or top depending on your phone. If you took the photo recently, it should be near the beginning.

Tips for Sending Photos

  • Send multiple photos at once by selecting several before tapping send — this is much faster than sending them one at a time
  • Use WiFi when possible to avoid using your mobile data allowance, especially when sending several photos
  • Add a caption to your photos so the person knows what they are looking at, especially if you are sending several pictures
  • Check before you send — take a moment to make sure you have selected the right photo and the right person
  • Save photos others send you by tapping and holding the photo in the chat and choosing Save — it will go to your phone gallery

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it cost money to send photos on WhatsApp?

Can I send photos to someone who does not have WhatsApp?

Unfortunately, no. Both you and the other person need to have WhatsApp installed. If they do not have it, you can send photos by regular text message or email instead.

How many photos can I send at one time?

You can send up to 30 photos in a single message on WhatsApp. Simply select multiple photos before pressing the send button.

Can I send photos during a video call?

Not during the call itself, but you can easily send photos in the chat before or after your call. If you are not sure how to video call, have a look at our guide on how to video call on WhatsApp.

You Are Doing Great

If this is new to you, take your time. Try sending a photo to a family member right now while the steps are fresh in your mind. Once you have done it a couple of times, it will feel like second nature. Your family will love hearing from you — especially when a photo is attached.
