Fingerprint Not Recognized

What This Means (In Plain English)

Your phone could not read your fingerprint. You can always use your PIN or pattern to unlock instead.

Low UrgencyThis is not urgent. Take your time with the fix.

Common Causes

  • Wet or dirty finger
  • Dirty fingerprint sensor
  • A scratch or cut on your fingertip
  • A screen protector covering the sensor (on in-display sensors)

How to Fix It — Step by Step

  1. 1

Wipe your finger and the fingerprint sensor with a clean, dry cloth.

  2. 2

Try using a different finger that you have registered.

  3. 3

Make sure you are placing your finger flat on the sensor.

  4. 4

If it keeps failing, go to Settings > Security > Fingerprint and delete your fingerprints, then add them again.

  5. 5

When re-adding, move your finger slightly between taps to capture different angles.

  6. 6

Restart your phone and try again.

How to Prevent This in the Future

Register multiple fingers. Keep the sensor and your fingers clean and dry. Register each finger from multiple angles.
