Android Error

Screen Not Rotating / Auto-Rotate Not Working

What This Means (In Plain English)

Your phone screen is stuck in one orientation and will not rotate when you turn the phone sideways. Auto-rotate may be turned off.

Low UrgencyThis is not urgent. Take your time with the fix.

Common Causes

  • Auto-rotate is turned off
  • The current app has locked the orientation
  • A software glitch
  • The gyroscope sensor has a problem (rare)

How to Fix It — Step by Step

  1. 1

Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings.

  2. 2

Look for "Auto-Rotate" or a rotation icon and tap it to turn it on.

  3. 3

If auto-rotate is already on, try turning it off and back on.

  4. 4

    Restart your phone.

  5. 5

Some apps lock the screen orientation — try rotating in a different app.

  6. 6

If nothing works, the gyroscope sensor may need calibration: search for a "Sensor Test" app in the Play Store.

How to Prevent This in the Future

Keep auto-rotate enabled. If you prefer portrait mode, remember to enable auto-rotate when watching videos.
