Don’t worry — this is a common issue and usually easy to fix!

Mac Error

Time Machine — Backup Failed

What This Means (In Plain English)

Your Mac could not complete its automatic backup. Your previous backups are still safe — the new one just did not finish.

Low UrgencyThis is not urgent. Take your time with the fix.

Common Causes

  • Backup drive disconnected or turned off
  • Not enough space on the backup drive
  • Backup drive corrupted
  • Network connection lost (for network backups)

How to Fix It — Step by Step

  1. 1

Check that your backup drive is connected and turned on.

  2. 2

Make sure there is enough space on the backup drive.

  3. 3

Try unplugging the backup drive and plugging it back in.

  4. 4

Go to System Settings > Time Machine and try backing up manually by clicking "Back Up Now".

  5. 5

If using a network drive, check your Wi-Fi connection.

  6. 6

If it keeps failing, you may need to erase the backup drive and start fresh (this deletes old backups).

How to Prevent This in the Future

Keep your backup drive connected and with plenty of free space. Time Machine will manage space automatically, but larger drives are better.
