Don’t worry — this is a common issue and usually easy to fix!

Wi-Fi & Internet Error

IP Address Conflict

What This Means (In Plain English)

Two devices on your network are trying to use the same address, which is like two houses having the same street number. They cannot both work properly.

Medium UrgencyWorth fixing soon, but no need to panic.

Common Causes

  • Two devices were assigned the same IP address
  • A device has a manually set IP address that conflicts
  • The router's DHCP server had a glitch

How to Fix It — Step by Step

  1. 1

Restart your Wi-Fi router — this usually reassigns addresses automatically.

  2. 2

Restart the device showing the error.

  3. 3

On Windows: open Command Prompt and type "ipconfig /release" then "ipconfig /renew".

  4. 4

On iPhone: Settings > Wi-Fi > tap your network > Renew Lease.

  5. 5

On Android: Settings > Wi-Fi > forget the network and reconnect.

  6. 6

If the problem keeps happening, restart all devices on your network one at a time.

How to Prevent This in the Future

Let your router assign IP addresses automatically (DHCP). If you have set any devices to use a manual/static IP address, make sure no two devices share the same address.
