Windows PC Error

Application Not Responding

What This Means (In Plain English)

A program on your computer has frozen and is not responding to your clicks. The rest of your computer is usually fine.

Low UrgencyThis is not urgent. Take your time with the fix.

Common Causes

  • The program has a bug
  • Your computer does not have enough memory (RAM)
  • Too many programs running at once
  • A conflict with another program

How to Fix It — Step by Step

  1. 1

Wait 30 seconds — the program may recover on its own.

  2. 2

If it does not recover, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete on your keyboard.

  3. 3

    Click "Task Manager".

  4. 4

Find the frozen program in the list and click on it.

  5. 5

Click "End Task" at the top.

  6. 6

Re-open the program — any unsaved work in that program may be lost.

  7. 7

If the program keeps freezing, check for an update or reinstall it.

How to Prevent This in the Future

Save your work frequently (Ctrl + S). Do not open too many programs at once if your computer is slow. Keep your software updated.
