What Is WhatsApp?

WhatsApp is a free messaging app used by over 2 billion people worldwide. It lets you send text messages, photos, voice messages, and make free voice and video calls — all using the internet instead of your phone plan.

Why it matters for seniors:

  • Free calls to anyone worldwide — Talk to family in India, Europe, Canada, or anywhere for free
  • Free video calls — See family face-to-face, no matter where they are
  • Send photos and videos — Share moments instantly
  • Works on any phone — iPhone and Android
  • End-to-end encrypted — Your messages are private; only you and the recipient can read them

If you have family overseas, WhatsApp is essential. It's the most popular messaging app in India, Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia.

Setting Up WhatsApp

Download and Install

  1. Open the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android)
  2. Search for "WhatsApp Messenger"
  3. Tap Install or Get
  4. Open WhatsApp

Create Your Account

  1. Tap "Agree and Continue"
  2. Enter your phone number (WhatsApp uses your phone number as your ID)
  3. WhatsApp sends a verification code via text message
  4. The code fills in automatically (or type it manually)
  5. Enter your name
  6. Add a profile photo (optional but helpful for contacts to recognize you)
  7. You're ready!

Import Your Contacts

WhatsApp automatically finds people in your phone's contacts who also use WhatsApp. You don't need to add them manually — they appear in your WhatsApp contacts list.

Sending Messages

Start a New Conversation

  1. Open WhatsApp
  2. Tap the new chat icon (pencil/message icon)
  3. Select a contact from your list
  4. Type your message in the text field at the bottom
  5. Tap the send arrow

Send a Photo

  1. Open a conversation
  2. Tap the "+" or paperclip icon
  3. Choose "Photos & Videos" or "Gallery"
  4. Select a photo
  5. Add a caption if you'd like
  6. Tap send

Send a Voice Message

This is one of WhatsApp's best features — especially if typing is difficult:

  1. Open a conversation
  2. Tap and hold the microphone icon (right side of the text field)
  3. Speak your message
  4. Release to send

Your contact hears your actual voice — much more personal than text!

Send Your Location

If someone needs to know where you are:

  1. Tap the "+" or paperclip → "Location"
  2. Tap "Send your current location"
  3. The person receives a map showing exactly where you are

Making Free Calls

Voice Call (Like a Phone Call)

  1. Open a conversation with the person
  2. Tap the phone icon at the top right
  3. Wait for them to answer
  4. Talk as long as you want — it's free!

Video Call (See Each Other)

  1. Open a conversation
  2. Tap the video camera icon at the top right
  3. Wait for them to answer
  4. You see each other face-to-face

Group Calls

  1. Start a call with one person
  2. Once connected, tap "Add participant"
  3. Add more people
  4. Up to 32 people can join a group video call

These calls use internet (Wi-Fi or data), not your phone minutes. When on Wi-Fi at home, calls are completely free and don't count toward your phone plan.

Group Chats

Group chats let you message multiple people at once — perfect for family groups:

Creating a Group

  1. Tap the new chat icon
  2. Select "New Group"
  3. Add members (select people from your contacts)
  4. Tap the arrow to proceed
  5. Name the group (e.g., "Family Chat," "Book Club," "Neighbors")
  6. Add a group photo if you'd like
  7. Tap "Create"

Group Chat Tips

  • Mute noisy groups: Tap the group name → Mute notifications → Choose 8 hours, 1 week, or Always
  • Reply to specific messages: Swipe right on a message to reply to it directly
  • Mention someone: Type @ and their name to get their attention
  • Leave a group: Tap the group name → scroll down → Exit Group

WhatsApp Status

Like stories on Facebook or Instagram, you can share photos or text that disappear after 24 hours:

  1. Go to the Status tab
  2. Tap the pencil (text) or camera icon
  3. Share a photo or type a message
  4. Your contacts can see it for 24 hours

This is a casual way to share what you're up to without sending individual messages.

Sharing Documents

WhatsApp isn't just for photos — you can share:

  • PDF documents
  • Word files
  • Spreadsheets
  • Contacts
  1. Tap the "+" or paperclip
  2. Choose "Document"
  3. Select the file from your phone
  4. Send it

Great for: Sending medical documents to family, sharing recipes, or forwarding important PDFs.

Privacy and Security

Frequently Asked Questions

Is WhatsApp really free?

Yes, completely free. No subscription, no fees. You need internet access (Wi-Fi or mobile data), but the app itself costs nothing. Calls and messages are free to anyone in the world.

Is WhatsApp safe?

WhatsApp is one of the most secure messaging apps available. All messages and calls are encrypted end-to-end. However, be cautious of messages from unknown numbers — scammers can message you if they have your phone number. Block and report suspicious contacts.

What's the difference between WhatsApp and regular texting?

Regular texts (SMS) go through your phone company and may cost money for international messages. WhatsApp uses the internet, so all messages and calls are free worldwide. WhatsApp also supports voice messages, video calls, group chats, and document sharing.

Can I use WhatsApp without a phone number?

No, WhatsApp requires a phone number to create an account. It uses your phone number as your identity.

Will WhatsApp use a lot of my phone data?

Text messages use almost no data. Voice calls use about 0.5 MB per minute. Video calls use about 5 MB per minute. On Wi-Fi, none of this counts toward your phone data plan. If using mobile data, a 10-minute video call uses about 50 MB.
