Don’t worry — this is a common issue and usually easy to fix!

Windows PC Error

Your Computer Is Low on Memory

What This Means (In Plain English)

Your computer is running out of working memory (RAM). Too many programs are open at once and the computer is struggling to keep up.

Medium UrgencyWorth fixing soon, but no need to panic.

Common Causes

  • Too many programs running at the same time
  • Too many browser tabs open
  • A program that has a memory leak (keeps using more memory over time)
  • Not enough RAM for the tasks you are doing

How to Fix It — Step by Step

  1. 1

Close programs you are not using — click the X button on each window.

  2. 2

Close browser tabs you do not need — each tab uses memory.

  3. 3

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.

  4. 4

Click the "Memory" column to sort by memory usage.

  5. 5

Select programs using a lot of memory that you do not need and click "End Task".

  6. 6

Restart your computer to clear out all memory.

  7. 7

If this happens often, you may need more RAM — ask a tech-savvy friend or computer shop about an upgrade.

How to Prevent This in the Future

Close programs when you are done with them. Do not open too many browser tabs at once. Restart your computer at least once a week.
