  1. 1

Open the App Store on your iPhone.

2Set Up Your Account

Open Messenger

Tap the blue Messenger icon on your home screen.

Sign in with Facebook

Tap "Continue as [Your Name]" if your Facebook account is detected, or tap "Log In" and enter your Facebook email and password.

Allow notifications

Tap "Allow" when asked about notifications so you know when new messages arrive.

Sync contacts

You can choose to sync your phone contacts so Messenger can suggest people you know. This is optional.

3How to Use Facebook Messenger

Send a message

Tap the pencil icon at the top right to start a new message. Search for a friend's name, tap it, type your message, and tap the send arrow.

Make a voice call

Open a conversation and tap the phone icon at the top right for a free voice call.

Make a video call

Open a conversation and tap the video camera icon at the top right. Allow camera access if prompted.

Send a photo

In a chat, tap the photo icon at the bottom left to choose a picture from your phone and send it.

React to a message

Press and hold any message to see emoji reactions. Tap one to react — it is a fun way to respond without typing.

Tips for Seniors

  • Messenger is separate from Facebook — you can send messages here without opening the Facebook app.

  • Tap the person's profile picture at the top of a chat to see options like muting, nicknaming, or changing the chat color.

  • Use the search bar at the top to find old conversations — type a name or keyword.

  • You can video call up to 50 people at once for family gatherings.

Common Issues & Solutions

I do not have a Facebook account
You can create a Messenger account with just your phone number — you do not need a full Facebook profile. During setup, choose "Create New Account" and follow the steps.
Notifications are not showing up
Go to iPhone Settings > Notifications > Messenger and turn on "Allow Notifications." Also open Messenger > your profile picture > Notifications and make sure they are enabled.
Messages are not sending
Check your internet connection. Try closing and reopening the app. If the problem continues, update Messenger in the App Store.
