How to Use YouTube on iPhone

This guide walks you through downloading, setting up, and using YouTube on your iPhone — one step at a time. No tech jargon, just clear instructions.

1Download YouTube

  1. 1

    Open the App Store.

  2. 2

    Search for "YouTube."

  3. 3

Tap "Get" next to YouTube by Google.

  4. 4

Confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, or Apple ID password.

  5. 5

Wait for the install to finish.

2Set Up Your Account

Open YouTube

Tap the red YouTube icon on your home screen.

Sign in (optional)

Tap the profile icon at the top right and sign in with your Google account. This lets you subscribe to channels and save videos. You can also browse without signing in.

Allow notifications

Choose whether to allow notifications about new videos from channels you subscribe to.

3How to Use YouTube

Search for videos

Tap the magnifying glass at the top and type what you want to watch — like "how to knit a scarf" or "Frank Sinatra songs." Tap a video to play it.

Subscribe to channels

Find a channel you like and tap the red "Subscribe" button below the video. New videos from that channel will appear in your feed.

Control playback

Tap the video to show controls. Tap the pause button to pause, or the full-screen icon to fill your screen. Drag the progress bar to skip forward or back.

Adjust quality

Tap the gear icon on the video, then "Quality" to choose a higher or lower resolution depending on your internet speed.

Save videos for later

Tap "Save" below a video to add it to your Watch Later list. Find it in Library > Watch Later.

Tips for Seniors

  • YouTube is free — you do not need a paid subscription to watch videos. YouTube Premium removes ads but is optional.

  • Search for tutorials on anything — "how to use iPhone," "easy recipes for one," "chair exercises for seniors." There is a video for everything.

  • Turn your phone sideways (landscape) for a bigger video view.

  • Use YouTube's "Captions" feature: tap "CC" on any video to see subtitles, which helps if you have trouble hearing.

Common Issues & Solutions

Videos keep buffering or pausing
Connect to Wi-Fi for smoother playback. Lower the video quality by tapping the gear icon > Quality and choosing a lower number like 480p.
I see too many ads
Free YouTube includes ads. You can skip most ads after 5 seconds by tapping "Skip Ad." YouTube Premium ($13.99/month) removes all ads if the ads bother you.
I accidentally subscribed to a channel
Go to the channel page and tap the "Subscribed" button to unsubscribe. Or go to Library > Subscriptions to manage all your subscriptions.
