How to Use Zelle / Venmo on iPhone

This guide walks you through downloading, setting up, and using Zelle / Venmo on your iPhone — one step at a time. No tech jargon, just clear instructions.

1Download Zelle / Venmo

  1. 1

For Zelle: Check your banking app first — most major banks have Zelle built in. If not, search "Zelle" in the App Store.

  2. 2

For Venmo: Search "Venmo" in the App Store and tap "Get."

  3. 3

Confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, or Apple ID password.

  4. 4

    Wait for installation.

2Set Up Your Account

Open the app

Open Zelle (in your banking app or the standalone Zelle app) or Venmo.

Create account or sign in

For Zelle: link your bank account by signing in with your bank credentials. For Venmo: create an account with your email and phone number, then link your bank account or debit card.

Verify your identity

Both apps will verify your identity with your phone number, email, and sometimes a photo ID for security.

Set up security

Enable Face ID or Touch ID for secure access. Set a PIN code as a backup.

3How to Use Zelle / Venmo

Send money

Tap "Send" and enter the person's email, phone number, or username. Enter the amount and add a note about what it is for. Review and confirm.

Request money

Tap "Request" and enter the person's details. Add the amount and a note (like "lunch last Tuesday"). They will receive a notification to pay you.

Check your balance

For Venmo, check your Venmo balance in the app. For Zelle, money goes directly into your bank account — check your bank balance.

View transaction history

See your past payments and requests in the activity or history section of the app.

Tips for Seniors

  • Zelle is often the safest choice because it is built into your bank app and money transfers directly between bank accounts.

  • Never send money to strangers — Zelle and Venmo payments cannot be reversed once sent.

  • Double-check the phone number or email before sending money to make sure it goes to the right person.

  • Start with a small test payment to a family member to make sure everything works correctly.

Common Issues & Solutions

I sent money to the wrong person
Contact your bank (for Zelle) or Venmo support immediately. Unfortunately, payments are usually final. This is why it is important to double-check the recipient before sending.
My bank is not supported by Zelle
Download the standalone Zelle app from the App Store and link your debit card directly. Alternatively, use Venmo which works with any bank.
I received a suspicious request for money
Do not pay requests from people you do not know — this is a common scam. Block and report the user. Your bank or Venmo will never ask you to send money via Zelle or Venmo.
