How to Use FaceTime on iPad

This guide walks you through downloading, setting up, and using FaceTime on your iPad — one step at a time. No tech jargon, just clear instructions.

1Download FaceTime

  1. 1

FaceTime comes pre-installed on every iPad.

  2. 2

Look for the green FaceTime icon on your home screen or in your app library.

  3. 3

If you cannot find it, swipe down and search for "FaceTime."

2Set Up Your Account

Open FaceTime

Tap the green FaceTime icon.

If you are signed into your iPad with your Apple ID, FaceTime is ready. If not, sign in when prompted.

Check your settings

Go to Settings > FaceTime to make sure it is turned on and your email and phone number are listed.

3How to Use FaceTime

Make a video call

Tap "New FaceTime," type a name or number, and tap the green video icon. The iPad's large screen makes video calls very enjoyable.

Make an audio call

Tap "New FaceTime," add a contact, and tap the green phone icon for a voice-only call.

Answer a call

When someone FaceTimes you, tap the green "Accept" button on the notification.

Use Center Stage

Newer iPads have Center Stage, which automatically keeps you centered in the frame even if you move around. It works automatically.

Share your screen

During a call, tap the screen, then tap the Share Content button to show the other person what is on your iPad screen.

Tips for Seniors

  • The iPad's large screen makes FaceTime feel like having a window to the other person — much easier to see faces than on a phone.

  • Use an iPad stand or prop it up in the case so you can sit comfortably during long calls.

  • Center Stage on newer iPads keeps your face in view even if you lean or move around, which is very convenient.

  • Connect to Wi-Fi for the best video quality on your iPad.

Common Issues & Solutions

The front camera shows a zoomed-in view
This might be Center Stage. Go to Settings > FaceTime and toggle Center Stage off if you prefer a fixed view. Some iPads have the camera on the long edge — make sure the iPad is in landscape orientation.
FaceTime keeps disconnecting
Make sure your Wi-Fi connection is stable. Move closer to your router. If on cellular, check that FaceTime is allowed to use cellular data in Settings > Cellular > FaceTime.
No sound during calls
Check that your iPad is not on silent mode. Increase the volume using the buttons on the side. Make sure nothing is covering the iPad's speakers.
