How to Use FaceTime on Mac

This guide walks you through downloading, setting up, and using FaceTime on your Mac — one step at a time. No tech jargon, just clear instructions.

1Download FaceTime

  1. 1

FaceTime comes pre-installed on every Mac.

  2. 2

Find it in your Applications folder, Launchpad, or by searching with Spotlight (Command+Space and type "FaceTime").

2Set Up Your Account

Open FaceTime

Click the FaceTime icon in your Dock, Applications folder, or Launchpad.

Sign in with your Apple ID if prompted. If you are already signed into your Mac, FaceTime is ready to use.

Check preferences

Go to FaceTime menu > Settings to verify your phone number and email are listed for receiving calls.

3How to Use FaceTime

Make a video call

Click "New FaceTime" at the top, type a name, phone number, or email, and click the green FaceTime video button.

Make an audio call

Click "New FaceTime," add a contact, and click the phone icon for an audio-only call.

Answer a call

When someone calls you, a notification appears in the top right. Click "Accept" to answer.

Create a shareable link

Click "Create Link" to generate a link you can share with anyone, including people on Android or Windows.

Use reactions

During a call, make hand gestures like a thumbs up or heart shape — your Mac camera will detect them and show animated reactions.

Tips for Seniors

  • FaceTime on a Mac gives you the biggest screen for video calls — perfect for seeing grandchildren or group calls.

  • Use an external webcam at eye level if your Mac is on a desk — looking down at a laptop camera can be unflattering.

  • Command+"+" makes the FaceTime window larger for better visibility.

  • Close other apps during calls to keep your Mac running smoothly.

Common Issues & Solutions

FaceTime is not receiving calls
Open FaceTime and make sure it says "Active" — if it says "Inactive," click "Turn On." Check System Settings > FaceTime and make sure your Apple ID is signed in.
Camera shows a black screen
Check that no other app (like Zoom or Photo Booth) is using the camera. If using an external webcam, make sure it is plugged in properly. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and make sure FaceTime is checked.
Poor video quality on older Mac
Close other apps to free up resources. Connect to Wi-Fi instead of cellular hotspot. An external USB webcam can provide better quality than some older built-in Mac cameras.
