Link to your phone

WhatsApp on iPad works as a linked device. Open WhatsApp on your phone, go to Settings > Linked Devices > Link a Device, and scan the QR code shown on your iPad.

Your messages and contacts will sync from your phone. This may take a few minutes depending on how many messages you have.

3How to Use WhatsApp

Send a message

Tap the compose icon at the top to start a new chat. Select a contact and type your message in the text field at the bottom. Tap the send arrow.

Make a voice call

Open a conversation and tap the phone icon at the top right corner to start a free voice call.

Make a video call

Open a conversation and tap the video camera icon at the top right. The iPad's front camera will activate.

Send a photo

In a chat, tap the "+" button, select "Photo & Video Library," choose your photo, and tap the send arrow.

View on the big screen

The iPad's larger screen makes it easy to read messages. Use the sidebar on the left to switch between conversations quickly.

Tips for Seniors

  • The iPad's larger screen makes WhatsApp much easier to read than on a phone.

  • Use Split View to have WhatsApp open alongside another app — swipe up from the bottom to see the Dock, then drag WhatsApp to one side of the screen.

  • Connect a Bluetooth keyboard to your iPad for easier typing of longer messages.

  • Increase text size in iPad Settings > Display & Brightness > Text Size for even larger text.

Common Issues & Solutions

I cannot link my iPad to WhatsApp
Make sure WhatsApp on your phone is updated to the latest version. Both devices need to be connected to the internet. On your phone, go to WhatsApp Settings > Linked Devices and try again.
My messages are not syncing
Keep your phone connected to the internet and powered on. The initial sync can take several minutes. If it stalls, close and reopen WhatsApp on both devices.
Video calls are choppy
Connect your iPad to Wi-Fi instead of using cellular data. Close other apps that might be using bandwidth. Make sure nothing is covering the iPad's microphone or camera.
