1Download WhatsApp

  1. 1

Open the Google Play Store from your Chromebook's app launcher.

  2. 2

Wait for it to download. You can also use WhatsApp Web as an alternative.

2Set Up Your Account

Click the WhatsApp icon in your app launcher or shelf.

Choose setup method

If using the Android app, enter your phone number to verify. If using WhatsApp Web (web.whatsapp.com in Chrome), scan the QR code with your phone.

Verify your number

For the Android app: enter your phone number and the 6-digit code sent via text. For WhatsApp Web: open WhatsApp on your phone > Settings > Linked Devices > Link a Device and scan the QR code.

Set up your profile

Add your name and an optional profile photo. Tap "Next" to complete setup.

Tips for Seniors

  • If the Play Store app feels small, try WhatsApp Web at web.whatsapp.com in the Chrome browser instead — it fills the whole screen.

  • Press Ctrl and "+" to zoom in and make everything on the screen bigger.

  • Chromebooks are very secure — WhatsApp data is protected by Chrome OS's built-in security features.

  • Use the Chromebook's built-in voice typing: press the microphone icon on the keyboard to dictate messages.

Common Issues & Solutions

WhatsApp is not available in the Play Store
Make sure Google Play Store is enabled on your Chromebook. Go to Settings > Apps > Google Play Store and turn it on. If your Chromebook does not support Android apps, use WhatsApp Web at web.whatsapp.com instead.
The app window is too small
Click and drag the corner of the WhatsApp window to resize it. Alternatively, use WhatsApp Web in the Chrome browser for a full-screen experience.
I am not getting notifications
Check Chromebook Settings > Notifications and make sure WhatsApp notifications are allowed. If using WhatsApp Web, make sure the Chrome tab is not muted.
