How to Use Uber / Lyft on iPhone

This guide walks you through downloading, setting up, and using Uber / Lyft on your iPhone — one step at a time. No tech jargon, just clear instructions.

1Download Uber / Lyft

  1. 1

    Open the App Store.

  2. 2

Search for "Uber" (or "Lyft" — both work similarly).

  3. 3

    Tap "Get" and confirm.

  4. 4

Wait for installation. You can install both apps to compare prices.

2Set Up Your Account

Open the app

Tap the Uber or Lyft icon on your home screen.

Create an account

Enter your phone number. You will receive a verification code via text. Enter it to continue.

Add your name and email

Enter your first name, last name, and email address.

Add a payment method

Add a credit or debit card for payment. You can also link PayPal or Apple Pay.

Allow location

Tap "Allow While Using App" for location access so the app knows where to pick you up.

3How to Use Uber / Lyft

Request a ride

Open the app and type your destination in the "Where to?" bar. Choose a ride type (UberX is the standard option). Tap "Confirm" to request your ride.

Wait for your driver

The app shows your driver's name, photo, car model, and license plate. Wait for them at your location. The app shows how far away they are.

During the ride

You can follow the route on the map. The app shows estimated arrival time. Share your ride status with family by tapping the shield icon.

Payment is automatic

When you arrive, the fare is automatically charged to your card. No cash needed. You can tip your driver in the app.

Tips for Seniors

  • Always check the driver's photo, name, and license plate before getting in the car.

  • Share your ride status with a family member: tap the shield icon and "Share my trip." They can track your ride in real time.

  • Schedule rides in advance: tap the clock icon when setting your destination to book a ride for a future time.

  • Try both Uber and Lyft — compare prices for the same trip, as one is sometimes cheaper than the other.

Common Issues & Solutions

I cannot find my driver
Check the app for the car model and license plate number. Call your driver by tapping the phone icon in the app. Make sure your location pin is in the right spot — drag it if needed.
The ride costs more than expected
Prices increase during busy times ("surge pricing"). The app always shows the estimated fare before you confirm. Check the fare estimate and wait for a less busy time if the price is too high.
I feel unsafe
The app has a safety button (shield icon). You can share your trip with family, see your driver's verified name and photo, and call 911 directly from the app in an emergency.
