This guide walks you through downloading, setting up, and using Google Maps on your iPhone — one step at a time. No tech jargon, just clear instructions.

1Download Google Maps

  1. 1

    Open the App Store.

  2. 2

    Search for "Google Maps."

  3. 3

Tap "Get" next to Google Maps by Google.

  4. 4

    Confirm and wait for installation.

2Set Up Your Account

Open Google Maps

Tap the Google Maps icon on your home screen.

Allow location

Tap "Allow While Using App" when asked for location access. This lets Maps show where you are.

Sign in (optional)

Sign in with your Google account to save favorite places and get personalized recommendations.

3How to Use Google Maps

Search for a place

Tap the search bar at the top and type an address, business name, or category like "pharmacy near me." Tap "Search."

Get directions

Search for a destination, then tap "Directions." Choose driving, walking, or public transit. Tap "Start" for turn-by-turn navigation.

See your location

Tap the blue circle icon at the bottom right to center the map on your current location.

Explore nearby

Tap categories at the top of the screen like "Restaurants," "Gas stations," or "Pharmacies" to see nearby options.

Save a place

Search for a place, tap it, and tap "Save" to add it to your saved places for future reference.

Tips for Seniors

  • Use voice directions: when navigating, the app speaks turn-by-turn directions so you do not need to look at the screen while driving.

  • Save your home address: tap "Saved" at the bottom, then set your home and work addresses. You can then just say "directions to home."

  • Download maps for offline use before traveling: search for an area, tap the three dots, and select "Download offline map."

  • Use the "Share location" feature to let family know where you are — tap your profile icon > Location sharing.

Common Issues & Solutions

My location is wrong on the map
Make sure location services are turned on: iPhone Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Google Maps > While Using. Go outside or near a window for better GPS signal.
Navigation voice is not working
Make sure your iPhone is not on silent mode (check the switch on the side). In Google Maps during navigation, tap the speaker icon and select the voice-on option.
The map is hard to read
Pinch outward with two fingers to zoom in. You can also tap the layers icon (stacked squares) and switch to "Satellite" view for a real-world photo view.
