How to Use Google Maps on Android Phone

This guide walks you through downloading, setting up, and using Google Maps on your Android Phone — one step at a time. No tech jargon, just clear instructions.

1Download Google Maps

  1. 1

Google Maps comes pre-installed on most Android phones.

  2. 2

If not installed, open the Google Play Store and search for "Google Maps."

  3. 3

    Tap "Install" or "Update."

2Set Up Your Account

Open Google Maps

Tap the Maps icon on your home screen or in your app drawer.

Allow location

Grant location access when prompted for accurate directions and nearby search.

3How to Use Google Maps

Search for a place

Tap the search bar and type an address or business name. Tap a result to see it on the map.

Get directions

Tap "Directions," choose your travel mode, and tap "Start" for navigation.

Explore nearby

Tap category chips below the search bar to find restaurants, gas stations, and more near you.

Share your location

Tap your profile picture > Location sharing > Share location. Family can then see where you are in real time.

Use voice

Say "Hey Google, navigate to [place]" to start navigation hands-free.

Tips for Seniors

  • Use voice search: tap the microphone icon and say where you want to go. No typing needed.

  • Share your real-time location with family members so they always know you are safe.

  • Save your home address and frequently visited places for one-tap navigation.

  • Download maps for offline use before traveling to areas with poor cell service.

Common Issues & Solutions

GPS takes a long time to find my location
Go outside or near a window. Make sure location is set to "High accuracy" in Android Settings > Location > Mode. Restart your phone if GPS continues to be slow.
Navigation voice is too quiet
Turn up your phone volume during navigation. In Google Maps Settings > Navigation > Guidance volume, set it to "Louder."
Maps is draining my battery
Navigation uses GPS and screen, which takes power. Plug in your phone during long trips. Lower screen brightness and close other apps.
