How to Use Zoom on Windows PC

This guide walks you through downloading, setting up, and using Zoom on your Windows PC — one step at a time. No tech jargon, just clear instructions.

1Download Zoom

  1. 1

Open your web browser (Chrome, Edge, or Firefox).

  2. 2

    Go to zoom.us/download.

  3. 3

Click "Download" under "Zoom Workplace for Windows."

  4. 4

  5. 5

Zoom will open automatically when installation is complete.

Double-click the Zoom icon on your desktop, or find it in the Start menu.

Click "Sign In" and enter your email and password, or click "Sign In with Google" for easier access.

Test audio and video

Click your profile picture at the top right, then "Settings." Click "Audio" to test your speakers and microphone. Click "Video" to check your webcam.

3How to Use Zoom

Join a meeting

Click "Join" on the home screen. Enter the Meeting ID and your name. Click "Join." Enter the passcode if required.

Start a meeting

Click "New Meeting" to start an instant video call. Click "Participants" at the bottom, then "Invite" to share the meeting link via email.

Mute and unmute

Click the microphone icon at the bottom left, or press the spacebar to temporarily unmute while holding it.

Share your screen

Click "Share Screen" at the bottom. Choose the window or your entire desktop that you want to share. Click "Share."

Use the chat

Click "Chat" at the bottom to open the meeting chat panel where you can type messages to all participants or privately to one person.

Tips for Seniors

  • Press the spacebar to quickly unmute when you want to speak — release it to mute again. This prevents accidental background noise.

  • Use "Gallery View" (top right during a meeting) to see everyone, or "Speaker View" to focus on whoever is talking.

  • Make Zoom larger: go to Settings > General > and adjust the scale setting. You can also use Ctrl+"+" to zoom in.

  • If you have a separate webcam, position it at eye level for the most natural-looking video.

Common Issues & Solutions

My webcam is not working
Make sure no other app is using the camera (close Skype, Teams, etc.). In Zoom Settings > Video, check that the correct camera is selected from the dropdown menu. If using an external webcam, try unplugging and plugging it back in.
People say they hear an echo
Use headphones or earbuds instead of your computer speakers. If no headphones available, reduce your speaker volume. In Zoom Settings > Audio, check "Automatically adjust microphone volume."
Zoom says my internet is unstable
Move closer to your Wi-Fi router. Close other programs using the internet (streaming, downloads). Turn off your camera if the connection is very slow — audio-only uses less bandwidth.
